Comfortably Numb was released in the eleventh album of the English rock band Pink Floyd in 1979. Guitarist David Gilmour wrote the chorus progression and guitar solos. The band’s lead vocals and bassist, Roger Waters, wrote the lyrics and verse progression. The song is popular for its two guitar solos and is considered one of the band’s most famous songs.

Comfortably Numb Covers

Before we take you on to our top 3 Comfortably Numb covers, let’s watch first the original music video by Pink Floyd. The song was an inclusion from the album The Wall. The concept was all about an embittered and alienated rockstar named Pink. In the music video, Pink is given medication by a doctor before a show for him to be able to perform. This was in fact taken from Waters’ experience of being given muscle relaxing medication for a stomach cramp before a performance in Philadelphia.

At the show, Roger’s hands were numb that felt like “two balloons” and was unable to focus. But he also saw that the fans were clueless because they were busy screaming, hence, the title “comfortably numb”. Then, as written in the lyrics, Waters also refers in the song of a time in his childhood when he had a fever. He is getting the same feeling again as an adult where he felt detached from reality while being in the state of delirium.

Comfortably Numb Lyrics

Comfortably Numb covers

Hello, Hello? Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home?
Come on now
I hear you’re feeling down
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again
I’ll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I’ve got that feeling once again
I can’t explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

Comfortably Numb Lyrics

Just a little pinprick
There’ll be no more, ah
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working, good
That’ll keep you going through the show
Come on it’s time to go

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb
